CEO Shortlisted for Prestigious Award

NINE of the North East’s leading business figures have been shortlisted in a prestigious national award, including Onyx Group CEO Neil Stephenson.

The nine top executives are among 43 business leaders competing for the title Ernst & Young North & Midlands Entrepreneur of the Year. Established in the 1980s, the awards celebrate people who build and lead successful, growing and dynamic businesses in more than 135 cities in 50 countries.

Andrew Spence, Newcastle partner at Ernst & Young, said: "We have a strong representation from the North East in this year’s programme. The finalists are fine examples of businesses picking up market share and succeeding despite economic adversity.

The North & Midlands independent, judging panel will include former Greggs boss Sir Michael Darrington. The North East finalists are:

Stephen Nelson and Richard Vertigan, finance director and MD, of 4 Projects Limited, Sunderland – software developer and distributor.

Dr Arnab Basu, CEO of Durham Scientific Crystals Limited (trading as Kromek), Sedgefield – manufacturer of medical and precision instruments.

Graeme Lowden, CEO of Nomad Digital Limited, Newcastle – data communications for transportation sector.

Greg Phillips, MD of North East Bakery Limited, Newcastle.

Neil Stephenson, CEO of Onyx Group Limited, Middleborough – managed IT services to businesses.

Dr Tony Flinn, CEO of Onyx Scientific Limited based in Sunderland – contract chemistry R&D services to the global pharmaceutical industry.

Chris Peacock, MD of Peacocks Medical Group Limited, Newcastle – provider of healthcare solutions.

Ian Edge, MD of Quantum Specials Ltd, Burnopfield – pharmaceuticals.
